One of the most important aspects of tantra practice is setting an optimal atmosphere for worship meditation. In India, diffused fragrance us a traditional mainstay of most spiritual activity, and not without reason. The human mind responds to olfactory inputs in different ways, and can therefore be conditioned into a worshipful state by such means.

There are various ways in which you can use your olfactory senses to tone your mind and enhance your overall experience in tantra sessions. One of these is the use of aromatherapy. Apart from setting the right kind of spiritual mood during tantra exercises, aromatherapy is a time-honored means to achieve overall healing of the mind and body. As a tantra teacher, I especially advocate its use in tantra meditation.
Aromatherapy in the form of aromatherapy candles or diffused essential oils is a wonderful source of nourishment for your mind, body and spirit. The oils used are completely organic and contain no chemical additives. The healing effect begins on inhaling the fragrance – the olfactory nerves are activated and stimulated, after which they transmit healing messages directly to the brain.
Apart from being an excellent way to establish the right kind of atmosphere for tantra meditation, aromatherapy can also heal various physical ills. This is because they have antibacterial, antibiotic and antiviral properties. The application or inhalation of certain natural essential oils can have a profound healing effect.
For instance, eucalyptus alleviate the symptoms of colds and offers relief to those who suffer from any kind of allergy. Geranium is wonderful for relieving stress, especially just before their periods. Lavender-scented aromatherapy candles are perfect for reducing anxiety and depression. In my tantra for couples sessions, I usually employ rosewood-scented aromatherapy candles because their pleasant, woodsy aroma creates an atmosphere of overall wellbeing.
One of the most powerful aroma therapy elements for tantra practice is basil oil, since it helps in sharpening concentration and also combats depression. Tea tree oil is an antifungal agent when applied locally and its smell also has an immensely healing effect. Similarly, lavender oil has a calming and relaxing effect.
No tantric master will claim that the use of aromatherapy is some kind of miracle cure for all ills – it is not. However, it certainly is extremely useful when it is used in tantra sessions. As for the aphrodisiac qualities of certain aromatherapy elements – sandalwood oil, jasmine and rose are said to have a profound effect on the human libido.
This is, of course, highly subjective and while it may work for some, it may not for others. However, it is certainly true that the erotic aspects of tantra are fundamentally based on worship and therefore hot-wired into its spiritual elements. Since aromatherapy is a powerful tool for establishing a worshipful atmosphere, no tantra teacher can dismiss this aspect altogether.

The tantra orgasm is a transcended, higher form of sexual climax. It becomes possible when the tantric student has practiced the various tantra meditation techniques that help him or her focus the mind to a superlative degree. With the guidance of a genuine tantra master, this can be achieved within a relatively short period of starting expert instructions.

To explain the unsurpassed joy of the tantric orgasm, it is first necessary to explain in spiritual terms what sexual climax really is. Human beings whose minds have not been tutored in the spiritual arts have cluttered and disorganized minds. Their minds are incapable of focusing on the moment. At any given time, they are thinking about the past or anxiously trying to formulate the future.
The times of sexual climax are often the only times in their conscious lives that their minds have the opportunity to focus solely on the present. However, the quality of this momentary state of mindlessness is usually contaminated with all sorts of negative emotions such as irrational expectations, guilt about the past and fear of failure to perform.
Orgasm is definitely not possible if the mind is experiencing sexual stress, guilt or any form of sexual anxiety. For instance, a mind that is preoccupied with previous sexual failures during sexual intercourse has already cursed the present moment. Likewise, a mind that is focused on a desired outcome of a current sexual encounter has already cursed the present moment.
A person trained in tantric meditation techniques has overcome all prejudices and expectations. The act of sex is no longer a performance – it is a tantric ritual of worship. Genuine worship, borne of true devotion to one’s intimate partner, is timeless. The mind of a worshipful person is supremely capable of staying completely in the Now.
Witness the single-minded devotion of the ancient sages – there were no deadlines, no agendas, no expectations. Their worship sprang from one and only one desire – to offer their love to their deities. There was no question of feelings of inadequacy. There was no fear of failure. There was no greed for a desired outcome. The purpose was worship and only worship – Here and Now.
For untrained, men, the moment of sexual climax is a brief jolt or spasm in which the body convulses in order to enable ejaculation. There is a brief, very fleeting reward signal of pleasure sent to the brain – the reward Nature has bestowed for the cat of keeping the human race going. This kind of climax is a short process cantered around selfish pleasure.
During sexual intimacy, a person trained in the tantric arts experiences everything in the Here and Now. The present moment loses meaning in context with time, and so it becomes timeless. A tantra orgasm can therefore go on for a long, long time. Throughout this period, the mind stays completely in the moment, and so the moment literally seems endless.
If you wish to experience the timeless joy of tantric sex, be aware that you must be taught this ancient science of love and life by an expert. Only a tantra teacher who has received these secrets in a seamless progression from instruction from the Ancients can teach you what you need to know.

Is self-gratification, or masturbation, an evil and degenerate act? The traditional religions of this world would have us believe so. The Old Testament, in particular, gave special admonishment about the fact that ‘spilling one’s seed upon the ground’ is an act of evil. Many other religions, sects and ‘moral codes’ subscribe to this line of thought, as well.

Ancient tantra does not subscribe to or teach the concept of good and evil, and no genuine tantra teacher will ever support it. That said, tantra does view the subject of self-gratification from an energy perspective – especially when it comes to the man.
Tantra teaches us that sexual energy is creative energy, and that the sexual act is, by definition, a creative act. In its natural state, it involves to polar gender opposites who relate to each other sexually both for the propagation of life and their own mutual pleasure.
The sexual act, to be complete, calls for a tantra goddess and tantra god to unite in the natural scheme of things. In their union, they expend and receive tantra energy specifically reserved for this union. In the natural union, there is no ‘energy leak’, as the tantric energy that the male expends during ejaculation is returned to him by his woman.
This is true both in a physical and spiritual sense. The male’s semen contains vital life-giving and life-sustaining fluids, and the natural reason of giving these to the woman is because she is capable to processing them and creating life from them. In turn, she reciprocates with fluids and female erotic energy which the male absorbs and is replenished.
By themselves, neither the man nor the woman is capable of creating life – or indeed the erotic energy that the soul craves for. In other words, self-gratification or masturbation is an incomplete act happening under incomplete circumstances. The catalysis which occurs when a man and woman meet in an intimate encounter is missing. There is no exchange of energy or life-giving elements – rather, a gift is given to no one at all, so it cannot be reciprocated.
Tantra does not view self-gratification as good or bad, virtuous or evil. It simply teaches that there is a natural order to things, and that all acts that comply with this order are beneficial to us. As a tantra teacher, I can tell you that masturbation is a perfectly acceptable means of letting off excessive sexual ‘steam’ – but it can never replace the real thing.
In today’s world, many people practice excessive self-gratification because they lack the self-confidence to pursue this natural order. There may be a sexual disconnect between erstwhile intimate partners. A guided course in ancient tantra under a genuine tantra teacher can infuse confidence and desire in the most jaded men and women. It can reconnect couples who have drifted away from each other and unite them in the sacred dance of tantra god and tantra goddess once again.
