When a tantra teacher begins his instructions with any set of new students, one of the first things that he must address are prejudices. Tantra teaches us never to condemn anything, because by doing so we are closing our hearts and souls to the Infinite. It is our prejudices that inhibit our potential for spiritual growth. And because of this, they must be exposed for the folly they are and be vanquished.

What are these prejudices? As a tantra master, I have come across all kinds – male chauvinism, feminism, bigotry, religious fanaticism, they are all forms of prejudice. Before I can even begin imparting tantra instructions, I have to help my students overcome their mental and spiritual barriers towards the natural diversity of all life. I do so by teaching my students the truths of ancient tantra, which was borne out of a universal acceptance of everything that exists as perfect.
In tantra for couples sessions, I many times discern an unspoken antipathy of the partners towards each other. This antipathy may have many reasons. The man may not approve of his woman’s friends. The woman may perceive that her man is excessively focused on his work. They may be derisive of each other’s’ religious or spiritual beliefs. There may be a tendency to expect sexual favours which are perceived to be perverted. Whatever the prejudice is, it must be addressed and resolved before any kind of spiritual instructions can begin.
Tantra is a science and system that is deeply rooted in worship and cherishing. Without these elements, no aspiring student of tantra can hope to make progress. It is a psychological fact that we cannot worship and cherish someone against we harbor some kind of bias. The souls must meet and unite on the level ground of cosmic equality.
Nature does not entertain or condone any concepts of higher or lower-born or superiority or inferiority in genetic antecedents. Tantra does not recognize religious distinctions at all. This must be clearly understood by any student of tantra who wishes to travel this ancient spiritual path.
To identify such prejudices, a tantra teacher relies on the deep psychological insights that his own training in this ancient art of love and life have provided him with. However, he must not be mistaken for a relationship counselor. The tantric master is a spiritual guide who can discern prejudice-based flaws in a relationship, and will address them in a manner prescribed by tantra scriptures.
Before you begin your tantric journey, it is good to examine your soul and find out if you harbour any kind of prejudices. If so, be ready to have them exposed for the foolishness they are. Tantra teaches Universal Acceptance, and it is into this kind of all-encompassing acceptance that you must grow in order to experience spiritual progress.

You may wonder what diet has to do with tantric practice, so allow me to clarify. As a tantra teacher, I instruct my students according to the original concepts and precepts laid down by ancient sages. While certain modifications are possible to the original context, there are also many aspects of ancient tantra that cannot be altered.
One of these aspects concerns the quest for purity – physically, mentally and spiritually. We are all familiar with the saying “we are what we eat”. When you set out to learn tantra and adopt the tantric lifestyle, this saying takes on a whole new meaning. Your food choices actually do dictate what you are and what you will become.

Ancient tantra was a science taught and practiced by Indian ascetics who took vegetarianism very seriously. They achieved considerably powers and spiritual advancement by refusing to veer off their chosen lifestyles – which in fact, have a firm basis in Hindu lore. It was believed then – and is believed even today – that by consuming meat, we progressively assimilate a bestial nature.
While this does not necessarily have a scientific basis, modern science has definitely shown us that a lot of the food we tend to eat today is quite harmful. The fast food movement has progressively poisoned the last few generations with deep-fried, flash fried food bereft of any nutritional value and loaded with harmful chemicals. When we eat such food as a matter of course, we are practicing a poisonous way of life that percolates into everything we are.
Tantra teaches us that a diet of simple, wholesome food helps us to adopt the simplicity and wholesomeness that make tantric practice possible. When our metabolism is in an uproar of food-induced toxicity, our minds too are in turmoil and our spirit suffers. Think of this – if we are what we eat, we are also not what we don’t eat.
Please take what I say now on faith, as I teach an ancient lore that is based on the wisdom of sages. Progressively abstaining from meat and adopting a more vegetarian diet will bring peace and harmony to your mind, body and soul. Your metabolism will have to work less to keep you alive by eliminating harmful chemicals. Your mind will become more attuned with nature, and your soul will begin to connect to the Source.
If you have made a firm decision to follow the spiritual path of tantra, ensure that you have found a suitable guide for your journey. A genuine tantra teacher will perceive the ill effects of a harmful diet in a student, and will strongly advocate dietary changes as part of the overall tantric instructions.

Ancient tantra recognizes sex and sexual intimacy as the wellspring of life. As such, it is not something to be ashamed of, to hide or to have issues with. In order for a tantra teacher to be able to instruct his pupils in the required fashion, he must first help them become comfortable with the powerful sexual energy that constantly courses through all of us.

Tantra teaches us that that sex is a friend, not an enemy. However, the uninitiated often treat sex as their most challenging enemy; as a constant source of worry, insecurity and despair. The way we look at sex is the way we look at the rest of ourselves, and our lives.
If we consider our sexuality as profane and evil, then that is how we perceive ourselves – for we were borne of sex, and it is through sex that we will procreate, effectively recreating part of ourselves. It is a contaminated way of thinking and seeing ourselves, and it leads to no end of grief in our personal lives. We must learn to break this cycle so that we can reach our fullest sexual and spiritual potential.
When your tantra teacher asks you to accept your sexuality and become friends with it, he is asking you to open the door to the knowledge of being and your innermost self. A tantra master helps his students to achieve this state of harmony with sexuality by means of various tantra rituals, meditation techniques and exercises.
Through these tantric rituals and exercises, we achieve sexual compatibility – first with ourselves, and then with our intimate partners. Yes, that’s right – you need to be sexually compatible with yourself before you become compatible with another. It is logical and axiomatic, yet we often overlook this fact.
According to the tantric scriptures, true love is the ability to relate both emotionally and sexually with another human being. The state of love requires the partners’ bodies and spirits to be in harmonious balance – first within themselves, and then in relation to each other. The process of achieving a state of tantra love calls for a harnessing of spiritual energy.
When this spiritual energy – or tantra energy – flows freely within our bodies, it can mingle and merge with the energy of another. Then – and only then – can we grow closer to our beloved partner. Love is not a selfish state – it is a state of devotion which we display worshipfully to our partners, thereby evoking a responsive devotion in him or her. In tantra, love becomes a sacred and devotional act which transforms the relationship into a state of awakened consciousness.
In a tantra for couples setting, the tantra master will teach his pupils to view themselves and each other as higher beings, possessed of sacred sexual energy. This sexual or tantra energy is then harnessed and multiplied by means of specific erotic tantra rituals. In the process, human defects and misgivings are left behind and a celestial sexual union can finally take place.
