There are a number of myths surrounding ancient tantra. This is primarily because there are so many charlatans propounding nonsense interpretations about this sacred art and science of love and life. It is startling to hear the untruths that many so-called qualified tantra practitioners spread. The biggest lie is that tantra is nothing but a set of instructions in sexual gymnastics cloaked in a mantle of spirituality. Associated with this myth is the misconception that tantra is the yogic equivalent of a double dose of Viagra.

The fact is that tantra is not merely about sex and sexual gratification. While sexual pleasure is certainly an important aspect of tantric practice, the erotic tantra component is actually the result of profound spiritual practices. Tantra is spiritual power, understood by few and given to even fewer. Those who think that it is all about sex will never attain it. This misconception denies the woman her rightful place as a tantra goddess in the man’s life. It denies the man his status as a Divine Masculine being. These two concepts are central and sacred in tantra.
The other myth we often encounter is that tantra can only be learned in one-on-one sessions in which both tantra teacher and student are physically present. This may have been true before the advent of the Electronic Age. Today, however, we can and do master entire new languages and valuable skill-sets via the electronic media. Online tantra workshops and tantra online courses are transforming people and relationships all over the world even as you read this. It is a fact that there are very few genuine tantra masters in the world today. However, many of those that are left give tantric instructions over the Internet. Distance is no longer a limitation.
It is also untrue that only highly sexual, extremely adjusted and spiritually inclined heterosexual couples can learn and benefit from the instructions of an authentic tantric teacher. This author has personally trained a number of same-sex couples in the intricacies of the tantric arts. Recovering drug addicts and alcoholics, those reeling under the trauma of childhood abuse and sexually challenged people have benefited greatly from these instructions.
Finally, abandon the myth that this ancient art of love and life will question or attempt to replace your existing religious or spiritual beliefs. The term Hindu tantra exists only because it was the ancient Hindu sages who first discovered and harnessed its powers. However, Christians, Muslims, Jews, Zoroastrians and people from any other religious or spiritual persuasion can learn and bloom under a genuine tantra master without abandoning their faiths.
Tantra is not black magic or some weird kind of sexual voodoo. It is a spiritual science with profound physical manifestations, and it can be understood and practiced by anyone – anyone at all – who wishes to get more out of life than what is available on the spiritual plane. It is an immense source of spiritual and sexual power that you can learn to tap into at any time under a proficient tantric teacher.

Ancient
tantra techniques can be used to integrate all aspects of our life into a blissful, unified whole. This is no exaggeration – this ancient science, apart from offering a means to holistic spiritual evolution, is also the art of Abundant Life in all its aspects. There are many disciplines that a
tantra master teaches his students, including various tantra yoga modules, pranayama (breathing), mudras, rituals and chants, kundalini tantra, energy-visualization of deities, alchemy and healing. In the process of learning tantra, a disciple’s entire physical and spiritual being is awakened and raised to its highest power.
The secrets of ancient tantra, when unfolded under the expert guidance of a qualified
tantra teacher, can change and empower you in hitherto unimagined ways. This ancient art and way of life is available to you today, captured from the closely guarded secrets of Hindu Tantra and the rejuvenating mysteries of tantra yoga. You will come face to face with the potent tantra deities that have the power to cleanse, energize and revitalize you.
As you behold them, you eventually learn to see your partner as a tantra goddess or god – and discover true sensuality. A life lived in a state of aware, alive tantra spirituality is a life lived to the optimum. It is lived at the peak in all respects – sexually, emotionally and spiritually – a life completely attuned and adapted to the ebbs and tides of the cosmic energy all around us that most never discern or learn to harness.
One of the most basic, and yet most powerful,
tantra techniques is the evoking of tantra deities through specific tantric mantra chanting, thereby focusing inwards and listening to the surging divine power there.
Under expert tutelage of a
tantra master, this practice causes a welling-up of spiritual consciousness within the individual. The result is increased conscious awareness of universal cosmic vibration – the very essence of the tantra goddess or god whose power, one is evoking.
The scripture ‘Yoni Devi Sutra’ recounts a cryptic conversation between Shiva and the acknowledged tantra goddess Shakti. It is considered a precursor to the famed ‘Kamasutra’ written by Vatsyayana, and it offers a glimpse of the laws of Hindu tantra regarding sexual behaviour.
A short verse from this scripture states:
“Dying… you fall in love, up close and yet so far
Let divine love descend upon our souls
And makes us divine spiritual beings of love…”
This profound spiritual concept is the fundamental nature of tantra.

In the ancient tantric scriptures, the word ‘chakra’ signifies a conscious spinning-energy wheel. A tantra teacher will reveal that there are seven such spinning-energy nerve centers located along the spinal column, and that every chakra corresponds to a specific area of our body. Further, each chakra represents a specific set of behavioral characteristics associated with that specific area of our body, and the various phases of our spiritual growth through them.
When you practice authentic tantra under the guidance of an experienced tantra master, you will learn to correctly focus your energies with specific positions/postures. This will help you to align the chakras, and to induce them to spin in their proper direction and velocity. Learning how to energize, focus and control the chakras through tantra meditation will help establish physical equilibrium and peace of mind, body and spirit.
The chakras are essential components of tantra courses. It is essential to understand the seven chakras and how each of them relates to a distinct part of our body along the spinal column, from the perineum to the crown of the head. All seven chakras pertain to a particular set of organs, distinct colors and sounds, specific emotions and/or behavior, and also control certain other personal aspects – including personal identity, goals and attitudes.
The seven chakras are:
• Muladhara – located at the base of the spine
• Svadhisthana – located around the abdomen, genital organs, lower back
• Manipura- located at the solar plexus
• Anahata – located in the heart area
• Vishuddha – located in the throat region
• Ajna or Agyna – located in the eyebrows region
• Sahasrara – located at the top of head and the cerebral cortex
When your tantra teacher guides you through certain tantra positions and yoga postures, you will be able to focus your conscious awareness and prana shakti (energy) on the chakras. This will allow you to correct specific areas of your body that are out of sync with or inactive in correlation to your body.
By balancing the prana shakti among all seven chakras, complete emotional, physical and mental balance is attained. This spiritual energy (or shakti) attained is better known as Kundalini shakti. In its sleeping state, it is pictured as a coiled-up serpent resting at the base of your spinal column, around the Muladhara chakra.
Because the chakras behave like valves influencing the flow of energy, the postures and techniques your tantra master teaches you are extremely beneficial in realigning the chakras to bring about complete harmony of mind and body.
Do not attempt any Tantra techniques without the close guidance and supervision of an experienced Tantra teacher if you wish to derive optimum benefits. Without proper guidance and supervision, most Tantra exercises can cause physical and emotional harm as they influence our mind, body and soul simultaneously.
