Tantric Technique by Subhojit Dasgupta on August 27th, 2012 8:51 am
As any tantra teacher must, I will begin by reiterating that awakening the kundalini must not be attempted without proper guidance from an accredited and reputable tantra master. The forces that are unleashed are not something which the uninitiated can comprehend or control. That said, kundalini awakening is definitely a major and desirable step for the serious student of tantra.

As stated, the tantric student must receive and understand the specific techniques and mantras for the purpose of awakening the kundalini. When the tantric master is satisfied that his student is fully prepared, the student must then seek a period of seclusion. This period will also involve a strictly controlled diet and abstinence from all sexual activity. This is only on a temporary basis, but it is nevertheless very essential.
Even after the initial seclusion period, the serious student of the tantric arts must seek to follow up with this practice at least twice a year. The prescribed period of seclusion is from three to nine days, but the student can start with a single day.
The idea here is not to ‘renounce the world’ or practice at becoming an ascetic. The purpose of seeking seclusion is to condition the mind and body for the unleashing of kundalini energy. If the mind and body are not prepared for this, there can be grave and irreversible consequences, including but not limited to mental disturbance and repercussions on the metabolism.
Silence is the key concept during this seclusion period. The student is not required to meditate, but simply to allow the mind to attain a high degree of focus. By staying away from all external stimuli, the mind finds its own equilibrium and opens to the answers that are to follow. Needless to say, the environment within the area of seclusion must be bereft of all distractions such as mobile phones, television, etc.
In ancient tantra, silence has always been recognized as a powerful force of transformation and enlightenment. By embracing silence, we are cutting down on communication with the outside world. In yogic terms, silence is simply a state in which one does not initiate or respond to any attempt at communication. With sufficient practice, this silence can be practiced in the midst of day-to-day life as well, but this is not possible for those who have not attained mastery over the art of silence.
The diet to be followed during this period of silence must consist of bland, boiled food. Fried, spicy food is to be avoided, as this kind of fare disrupts the body’s natural functioning and adds to mental turmoil. It is advisable to stick to a strict vegetarian fare during this period.
Simple yogic exercises are permitted and even desirable during this period, but they must be performed at a leisurely pace. Nothing must occur to raise the body temperature beyond the normal limit, or to create rushes of blood to the brain. The student learns to be comfortable in silence and in the absence of productive activity. He or she learns simply to be.
After this period of silence and seclusion, the student returns to the tantra teacher in full readiness for the tantric instructions that are to follow. Only in the tranquil and receptive state that is a by-product of seclusion and silence can the student then embark on the task of kundalini awakening.

Those who have studied tantra and are applying its precepts and practices in their love lives know one fundamental truth – intimacy and sex are not necessarily the same thing. This is why I make it a point to refer to ‘sexual intimacy’ specifically as such.
Sex can definitely derive from intimacy, which is nothing but a deep bond between two people – a bond based on constant mutual cherishing. This is sexual intimacy, or sex which happens within the purview of a loving relationship.

However, sex can happen even outside an intimate relationship. When this happens, it is not sexual intimacy, because the bond based on mutual cherishing is absent. Often, in such sexual encounters the partners are not attuned and acclimatized to each other. They may not even know each other at all. Or the sexual act may happen in an environment of violence, such as in rape or in so-called ‘make up sex’.
Tantra has nothing to do with sexual activity outside a loving, cherishing relationship. It is all about building a deep bond of love, worship and adoration between two intimate partners. When used in this context, tantric practices are indeed a powerful and transformative force.
When learned under the guidance of a tantra master, this ancient science of love and life can repair, bulwark and elevate human relationships to a celestial level. Sex becomes an extension of a worshipful attitude towards each other. It involves not merely the bodies but the minds and souls of the intimate partners.
In tantric sex, intimacy is raised to the highest level. The intimate partners have learned extensively about themselves and each other. They have identified their own and their partners’ blocks to genuine intimacy and have put in focused work to overcome these. There is no guilt, fear or holding back of any kind involved. It is a cosmic dance of liberated souls and bodies which have been conditioned for intimacy by specific tantra rituals and exercises.
When sex happens between strangers, non-consenting people or under any unnatural conditions, there is no place for true intimacy. All that is being satisfied is a selfish quest for physical release. There is no desire to satisfy the other – or, if it exists, such desire is based on an insane delusion. Tantric sex cannot take place between two unprepared people. It is the highest expression of love and intimacy between two people who cherish each other.
When two mutually cherishing partners use tantra to improve their love for each other, they become united in wondrous and mystical ways. There are no limitations – the Heavens themselves open up to shower a blessing of celestial joy on the couple. Are you and your partner prepared for such a union? Then you are ready to learn the mysteries of tantric intimacy from a genuine tantra teacher.

As a tantra teacher, I often refer to tantric sex and the tantra orgasm as ‘the small death’. This may seem paradoxical, since sex is basically a life-generating activity. However, in tantra, sex is the penultimate release of bliss. In a tantra orgasm, you vanish in totality for a moment. This moment may be short of prolonged, depending on how far your tantra teacher has taken you in his instructions.

During a tantric orgasm, the essential ‘you’ blinks out of existence. You lose all sense of self, all your concerns and fears disappear, and all that matters is that one celestial moment you share with your intimate partner. Both of you join the cosmic pool of existence, where identity is meaningless and all that matters is the Whole. You become part of the Whole. Blissfully, joyfully, you transcend everything that is basely human and get a taste of your true divine natures.
Such an orgasm is pure energy, so ego plays no part in it. You are not meant to control this moment. Many a time in my tantra for couples sessions have I been confronted with the misconception that the tantra orgasm is all about orgasmic control. These people have no idea what they are talking about. In tantra sex, the climax is pure chaos – there is no question of ‘control’. Your mind shuts down and your spirit takes over, so how can you possibly control anything? There is no context of time, and no agenda. You abandon yourselves completely and allow the cosmic forces that shaped you to have full reign.
In the tantra orgasm, you and your partner become one. No longer are you two separate beings with separate identities and individual aspirations from the sexual act. You are conscious to the moment, yet blissfully unconscious of yourselves as individuals. All boundaries are breached, all limitations overcome and every defensive wall crumbles into dust. You and your partner become infinite.
In tantra, climax control is not about conscious effort to prolong the moment of ecstasy. The physical climax may be short, but the profound joy of oneness with your partner – the oblivion you have achieved – can last for hours. This is a spiritual orgasm – a state from which you never want to emerge (but will, eventually). Your tantra teacher can instruct you in achieving this state and staying there to experience this joy of complete oneness with your partner.
Remember that tantric sex is very different from normal coitus. The entire process is one of mutual worship and cherishing. You are not quenching a thirst or sating a hunger. You are not fulfilling a need. Rather, you are immersing yourselves in a profoundly cosmic experience. It is an act of meditation and worship in which the concepts of time, ego and need have no place.
Normal sex is often combative – a clash of individual agendas to attain selfish satisfaction. In tantra sex, you and your partner melt into each other and become one. You have a single objective – and that is to offer love, pleasure and adoration to the other.
