There are many faddist sects that claim to propagate the cause of sacred sexuality today. However, ancient tantra is the only genuinely spiritual path that embraces and teaches the art of celestial eroticism. This ancient Indian art of love has its roots in yoga; this is why many of the tantra exercises prescribed by a tantra teacher are in fact yogic postures that have been adapted for tantric instructions.
Translated from its Sanskrit, the word tantra pertains to expansion, joining or weaving. There is logic to this meaning, because tantra is all about expanding consciousness, joining intimate partners in a celestial embrace of spiritual awareness and weaving their spirits together where only the bodies joined before. The erotic essence of Hindu tantra is aptly represented by the world-famous Indian treatise of spiritual sexuality – the Kamasutra.
This ancient scripture was written by Vatsyayana, an Indian sage who had a very unique take on life. Rather than seeing it as mere physical existence with spiritual aspirations, he thought of it as an orchestration of spiritual, financial and sensual impulses. The word ‘Kama’ refers to the delight in objects and pursuits by the five senses, with the mind and soul supporting this delight. The spiritual aspect must not be overlooked, or the entire meaning of Vatsayana’s immortal work will be lost.
It is noteworthy that tantra in not the mere pursuit of sexual pleasure. It is about cultivating spiritual love and passion as well as worshipful reverence for one’s intimate partner. A genuine tantra master’s efforts will not be just towards turning his pupils into sexual adepts, but also balancing their male and female energies so that they can join in the celestial dance of Shiva and Shakti. There must be a physical as well as spiritual union, and these can be achieved by practicing the tantric arts.
To encourage the required attitude of worshipful reverence, tantric practices put a lot of emphasis on rituals and ceremonies. These rituals serve the distinct purpose of tempering the urgency for sexual release and bringing about a meditative, ceremonial mind-set. Only when this mind-set is achieved can a student of tantra begin to understand what sacred sexuality is all about.
Students of tantra should keep in mind that undiluted tantra – meaning tantra that has not been contaminated by faddist pop cultures – was never put down in writing. The purest form of Tantra was not passed down in writing, but only by way of initiations and personal instruction. It is therefore important to find a tantra teacher who has undergone ritual instruction by another genuine tantra master.

Many spiritual schools of thought require the practitioner to suppress or deny the senses in order to achieve spiritual enlightenment or accomplishment. This is not the case with tantra, which is in fact a means to attain spiritual liberation. The senses – especially the pleasure senses – are very much part and parcel of the tantra spirituality experience. Under the tutelage of an experienced tantra master, the base flesh becomes infused with spiritual light.
Tantra proposes that a human being can achieve extremely high levels of spiritual consciousness via tantra meditation and various tantra practices. This ancient art and science does not deny but rather embraces the pleasure senses as inalienable from the human experience, and as invaluable spiritual tools. By following the precepts of ancient tantra, the practitioner explores the realm of the senses completely, and also learns to merge the physical with the spiritual.
In tantra for couples sessions, lovers discover the secrets of sacred sexuality, and their bond of intimacy deepens incredibly. There is no human experience that compares with that of love embellished with the expanded consciousness of a spiritual tantra awakening. No longer is the love and passion earth-bound – it joins the divine and becomes a celestial force.

There are various rituals and exercises to be followed, and these are set in bedrock of meditation. Any tantra instructor who does not adhere to this spiritual path is not genuine and should be avoided. Only an approach that deifies both partners in an intimate relationship, takes them by the hand and leads them to the spiritual light is worthy of the true spiritual seeker.
